About

Hello, I’m Sally. I live and work aboard Craftybird, my 70ft narrowboat and floating workshop, built by Roger Fuller.

I travel the waterways with two small dogs and a workshop full of tools and projects. Craftybird also has a 76-year-old Lister JP2 engine who has her own (growing) fan base!

I’ve been making things for years, mostly from leather and often from materials that have already had another life. I still make and sell things from the boat, but Craftybird has gradually become about something else too.

As I travel the canals and rivers of the UK, I meet fascinating people with stories I’d never otherwise have heard. I also stumble across oddities and find myself wondering about things that would be very easy to pass by without noticing.

So this website is where I collect them.

Field Notes is for the people, places and curious things I find along the way.

The Floating Workshop is where I make, mend, experiment and occasionally wonder why on earth I started something.

And the Shop is where you’ll find my welly boot range, including windlass holders and greetings cards, as well as occasional one-off pieces you may have seen me making in the workshop.

Mostly, though, Craftybird is about curiosity, taking an interest in people, places and things, and sometimes stopping to find out a little more.
